Did you start feeling pain in your shoulder recently?
Worse at night or when you are resting?
Headaches/ burning sensation/ pins and needles or even numbness inn the hand or elbow
It might not even be your shoulder!
The symptoms just described can be related to the neck
The cervical spine is the origin of many nerves that go to the shoulder and arm
They form a network that is called the brachial plexus, which allows us to move the muscles and to feel movement.
If anything goes wrong where the brachial plexus starts. Like a tight muscle that pinches the nerve root or a stiff joint in the vertebrae that prevents good movement. The pain, discomfort or pins and needles can be felt in the arm neck and back, usually close to the shoulder blade.
So, how do I know if it is my neck and not my shoulder?
There are two simple tests that you can do at home.
First neck rotation, we are going to turn our heads as far as we can towards the affected side. If the movement triggers the usual pain you feel on your shoulder, then this can be considered as a positive hint that something might be happening in the cervical spine structures.
The second test is hand over head. We are going to put our affected arm over the head. If this movement relieves the pain, or numbness on the hand. It can be considered a positive sign of cervical compromise.
These test by themselves do not gives us a diagnosis. But can help you and your physio to understand your symptoms better.
So do not be alarmed if our physios include treatment to your neck for your shoulder symptoms. Book in now on 0191 4350560
