At The Performance Clinic our Osteopath are members of the HCPC and General Osteopathic Council ensuring they adhere to the very highest standards of practice.
Osteopathy encourages the body’s natural ability to heal and will look for underlying reasons rather than just treating your symptoms.
Eileens treatments combine functional, structural and also cranial Osteopathy techniques.
Cranial Osteopathy offers a gentle hands on approach. Cranial osteopathy was developed from osteopathic medicine in the early 1900s, especially through Sutherland.
Osteopathy treatments are suitable for babies supporting healthy development, through to adults.
Common areas of treatment that Eileen likes to treat
Both are manual therapists with an emphasis on joint manipulation and share a similar history — the first chiropractor was a student of the first osteopath in the 1880s and took chiropractic down a different route.
In practical terms, chiropractic manipulations tend to be shorter and sharper, while osteopaths use longer leverages. Chiropractic sessions are usually shorter but more frequent, and chiropractors use more x-rays for diagnostics.
At The Performance Clinic, our physios and osteopath work closely together. All our therapists are able to assess and diagnose, yet our treatment approach theories and techniques differ.
In addition, our osteopath also offers cranial osteopathy, a light manual therapy technique which has incredibly strong results.
A system of manual medicine where we look at the body as a whole unit with the capacity to heal itself, and at the relationship between the neuromusculoskeletal system and the other systems of the body.
Osteopaths have a well-deserved, evidence-based reputation for expertise in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions such as back, neck, joint, muscle and arthritic discomfort. People also visit osteopaths for neuromuscular conditions such as sciatica, digestive issues, headaches and migraine prevention.
Osteopaths treat patients, not conditions. These are some of the presentations we see regularly:
Cranial treatment for babies: the unsettled baby (especially after a difficult delivery), colic, poor latch, glue ear, the snuffly baby.
Cranial treatment for adults: jaw problems, headaches, migraines, sinus problems and vertigo. Also suitable for patients who do not respond well to, or prefer not to have, manipulative treatment.
Osteopathic treatment is usually a very gentle process. There may be times when you experience discomfort during treatment or mild soreness afterwards, which normally goes away within 48 hours.
Your osteopath will let you know if any recommended techniques are likely to be uncomfortable.
Some patients may be aware of subtle changes during cranial treatment — perhaps a warmness around the area being treated, a gentle trickling sensation, or a sense of release.
Most simply feel a deep sense of relaxation during treatment and only notice symptomatic changes in the days afterwards.
Many short-term injuries only require a short course of treatment, but more chronic problems will take longer to unravel.
Regular maintenance sessions are recommended, especially for older patients, for the management of arthritic pain, rheumatic conditions, and ongoing postural problems (usually related to desk work).
Osteopathy is safe in pregnancy to help with low back and pelvic pain, and the postural changes that pregnancy brings.
We avoid manipulative treatment in the first trimester but use it extensively in later stages to keep the low back and pelvis flexible, creating space for safe delivery.
A post-partum check-up for both mother and baby is recommended to help resolve any issues arising from the delivery.
Osteopathy is a very gentle treatment suitable for all ages. We consider the different developmental stages from infant to toddler, through the school years and into the teens.
